Evidence of Learning
Briefly describe an example (or provide a hyperlink to your work) to demonstrate your level of learning. |
| 1 | Examine how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users. | Analyze how linguistic standards discriminate against speakers of non-standard english | 4 | Throughout the unit we analyzed language and literacy and on multiple occasions it was focused on speakers of non-standard English such as Tan’s Mother Tongue. I later practiced this in my LLN where at a young age I did not speak or write properly and was challenged and struggled to overcome the pressure. |
| 2 | Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. | Be able to acknowledge and write for different genres and audiences
Be able to read, recognize and write for a variety of genres and audiences Understand how to write for a variety of genres and audiences |
5 | Throughout the semester we were tasked in creating different pieces. This started with our LLN projects where I chose to write to the school system wanting to establish change and then I had to create a Translation project where I had to present my ideas visually to my classmates demonstrating being able to present to different audiences in different styles of communication. |
| 3 | Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing. | Learn how to write and edit effectively | 5 | I have learned that writing pieces come in stages. We have become accustomed to writing an initial draft piece, where the work is extremely raw and unfinished, and through multiple stages of peer review, feedback, and reflection we refine it to a final piece that resonates with our ideas and thoughts. This is seen clearly from my very first draft of my Synthesis Essay compared to a complete well thought out final draft that I felt was presentable. |
| 4 | Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations. | Understand and use rhetorical terms (description, symbolism, all elements of the rhetorical triangle) in your own writing | 3 | We learned how to do this multiple times when analyzing different stories. I was able to apply this in my LLN where I was able to use description and symbolism to bring my story to life and really immerse the reader in my writing. |
| 5 | Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences. | Understand how to use media to best deliver your message to specific audience | 5 | We were able to practice this in both of our Translation projects. In the first one I had to use images to provide context and amplify my message as I explain my story to my classmates. I also did this in Translation 2 where I created a meme to portray my message to anyone who sees it. |
| 6 | Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias. | Effectively find credible sources on both CUNY databases and the internet | 5 | I was able to use the CUNY database to find 6 sources for my Synthesis Essay and 4 from the internet and I was able to narrow them down into strong and useful sources for my essay. |
| 7 | Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation. | Writing a clear stance, supported by strong analysis
(with summary and synthesis) of relevance source
|
5 | Yes, I spent a lot of time reflecting and synthesizing sources multiple different times in order to form a coherent essay with a clear stance backed up by proper evidence. |
| 8 | Practice systematic application of citation conventions. | Apply citation standards (works cited an in-text) accurately and regularly | 4 | In class we learned how to cite sources properly according to MLA format and we applied this in our Synthesis Essays to cite the sources that backed up our claims. |
